L-Theanine

L-Theanine

Overview

L-theanine is a water-soluble amino acid responsible for the distinctive tea taste. Theanine is a unique amino acid because it is not built into body proteins but is used immediately for energy production.

Mechanism

About half an hour after ingestion one experiences a relaxing and calming effect without becoming drowsy. Theanine stimulates motivation through its influence on the neurotransmitter dopamine. In combination with caffeine from Guarana, for example, theanine improves mental alertness, concentration and focus while delaying mental fatigue.

L-theanine reduces the stimulant and sleep depressing effect of caffeine but enhances mental focus through caffeine. Conclusion? To enjoy the mental effects of caffeine without feeling rushed (increased blood pressure, heart rate) it is amazing to combine caffeine with theanine.
